MATE Engages Students in Waste Recycling and Environmental Sustainability

As a partner in the Horizon Europe REPurpose project, the Institute of Aquaculture and Environmental Safety at the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE) recently conducted an impactful dissemination event at Fabriczius József Primary School in Veresegyháza.
The event, held during the school's "Theme Week", aimed to educate students about composting, waste recycling, and reducing environmental impact. Lower grade students (ages 6-10) learned about the role of bacteria, aquatic organisms, and water quality testing through interactive presentations and activities. Upper grade students (ages 10-14) participated in a waste recycling competition, submitting creative ideas via video, PPT, and text.
Nearly 300 lower grade students entered the drawing competition, showcasing their understanding of recycling. The best entries were awarded books and art packs. The upper grade competition attracted 180 students in teams of 3, with winners to be announced in May. The high level of participation demonstrates the students' commitment to environmental sustainability.
MATE also set up composting bins in both schools to encourage students to recycle waste. The successful event inspires the researchers to continue engaging students in learning about environmental topics. Competition winners will visit MATE's Institute to learn more about university programs and research.
Through this dissemination activity, MATE successfully raised awareness about the REPurpose project's goals to develop sustainable materials from consumer waste. By educating and inspiring the next generation, MATE is making a meaningful impact in promoting environmental stewardship.
